These two options are often discussed together, but they serve very different needs.
Two different stages of retirement living
A 55+ community is generally designed for age-qualified adults who live independently in their own home. A nursing home or skilled nursing facility serves people who need ongoing assistance, rehabilitation, or medical care. The central difference is the level of care, not the age of the building.
What a 55+ community can offer
Residents may value peer connections, activities, amenities, and lower-maintenance living. However, a 55+ community is not automatically a healthcare setting and may not provide the services required if care needs increase.
When care becomes the priority
If a person needs significant help with medication, mobility, bathing, eating, or cognitive safety, the family should evaluate the appropriate level of care rather than choosing a community based only on housing preferences.
Questions to ask first
How independent is the person today? What changes are reasonably possible over the next five to ten years? What budget and backup plan are available? These questions help families compare independent 55+ living, assisted living, and skilled care.
